- Thomas Jefferson is buried at his Monticello Estate in Virginia. The photographs below show his original tombstone along the Francis Quadrangle and epitaph in Jesse Hall, both at the University of Missouri.
- While the tombstone shown above is the original, the epitaph attached to it is not. The original epitaph is located inside of the University's Jesse Hall, shown below.
- The photographs below show the original Thomas Jefferson epitaph located inside Jesse Hall. The plaque at the base of the epitaph reads: As the first public university west of the Mississippi River and the first state university in the Louisiana Purchase territory, MU identifies strongly with Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States and founder of the nation's first public university. In 1883, Jefferson's descendants gave the university his original tombstone and epitaph. The carved marble epitaph, inscribed with his own words, was damaged in the 1892 fire that destroyed Academic Hall. After restoration by the Smithsonian Institution 2014, the epitaph was put on permanent display at MU thanks to the generosity of Jefferson Club donors.
